How to Print QR Codes

SVG vs PNG: Which Format to Print?

Always use SVG for print. SVG is vector-based, meaning it scales to any size without losing quality. PNG works for digital use but can become pixelated when enlarged for posters or banners.

Minimum Print Sizes

Rule of thumb: the scanning distance in meters ÷ 10 = minimum QR code size in cm.

Color Do's and Don'ts

• ✅ Dark foreground on light background (black on white is safest)
• ✅ High contrast ratio — aim for at least 4:1
• ❌ Never invert colors (light modules on dark background)
• ❌ Avoid red or orange modules — some cameras struggle with warm tones
• ❌ Don't print on reflective or glossy surfaces without testing

Material Considerations

• Matte paper — Best for scanning, no glare
• Glossy paper — Test under different lighting; avoid placing under spotlights
• Stickers & labels — Ensure the surface is flat; curved surfaces may distort the code
• Metal & glass — Use matte lamination; reflections cause scan failures
• Fabric — Ensure high contrast; texture can interfere with scanning

The Quiet Zone

Every QR code needs a blank border called the "quiet zone." This helps scanners identify where the code begins and ends. Our generator includes a 2-module margin by default. When designing layouts, don't place text or graphics too close to the QR code edge.

Pre-Print Checklist

1. Scan the code on at least 3 different phones
2. Test from the intended scanning distance
3. Verify the destination URL works
4. Check colors display correctly in print proof
5. Ensure the quiet zone is preserved in your layout
